Mold: Why you should make sure your insurance program or Construction Company will cover costs of removal

When building a home, one of the most important issues that should be discussed and taken care of is mold. Not only is mold visually unattractive, according to a MAYO Clinic medical study, nearly all of chronic sinus infections come about because of mold and the 300% increase in asthma rate between 1986 and 2006 was caused by mold. Hence, it is clear that you definitely do not want mold in your new home. However, often times, getting work to get rid of mold will cost thousands of dollars and will not be covered by insurance companies. Therefore, it is the buyer's job to make sure that the company that is building their house has a policy on mold treatment, so that if it begins to appear, you can get rid of it at a low price.

The best case scenario would be to avoid mold all together and this can be done following a few steps. In residential construction, the main cause of mold is because of the difference in temperature between the air inside the house and the air outside the house, especially if you use air conditioning. Other causes include the nature of building materials that are sometimes used in construction and poor air ventilation.

One of the best ways to prevent mold is to monitor and adjust humidity. As a general rule of thumb, keeping humidity below 60% will rid the problem of mold all together.

Mold can be serious problem for homeowners, especially those who just had a new house constructed. The best thing would be to avoid mold together but just in case, be sure mold treatment is covered either by your insurance program or the company who you used to construct your house.
